Preparing young people with skills for life

We're Scouts and everyone is welcome here. Every week, we help almost half a million people aged 4-25 develop skills for life. Are you ready to join the adventure?

Welcome to Walkham Valley

Young people have had access to Scouting in our local area since the 1940s. 1st Yelverton and 1st Walkhampton Scout Groups were amalgamated in 1970 to form Walkham Valley Scout Group, which has since provided essential, exciting and memorable experiences for young people in our community. We are very fortunate to have a brilliant field sited behind St Paul’s Church Hall, within which a hut was built in 2017 by two of our Scout Leaders.

The Group had a difficult start to 2024, with the two remaining Sections needing to close due to a lack of volunteers, despite healthy membership numbers. Fortunately we have been able to grow the Scout Group back from the bottom up, with Squirrels and Beavers opening in September 2024, followed by Cubs in February 2025 and finally Scouts in March 2025. The Group has been reinvigorated with a raft of new volunteers providing exciting programmes of activities for the young people, with the support of the Board of Trustees managing the governance of the Group in the background.

We have a range of experience across our volunteers, from those with 25+ years of service to the Scout movement, to those who are in their first few months. We are always welcoming of new volunteers regardless of how much or how little time they are able to give, as every little bit really does help. Whether you cut the field, sort the badges, manage the finances, run the activities or look after the equipment, every role helps to keep our Group running so that we can provide ‘skills for life’ to the young people in our community.

So, what do Scouts do?

Scouts are do-ers and give-it-a-go-ers. Yes, we go camping, hiking, swimming, abseiling, cycling and canoeing.

But, we also get to hang out with our friends every week – having fun, playing games, working in a team and taking on new challenges.

Every week we give almost half a million 4-25 year olds the skills they need for school, college, university, the job interview, the important speech, the tricky challenge and the big dreams: the skills they need for life.

Everyone’s welcome here. All genders, races and backgrounds. Regardless of your young person’s physical ability – there’s a Scout adventure out there waiting for them. And we’ll help them find it.
